Things To Consider With Photo Restoration

By Thomas Murray

Many people will have collections of photographs in their homes. Many of these will be old family pictures whose condition has deteriorated over the years or been accidentally damaged. There are companies who specialize in photo restoration and they will bring your pictures back to life and in some cases they will be better than the originals.

There are a couple of options open to you when you are searching for a company to carry out restoration work on your photographs. There are shops in many high streets who will offer this service. The other place to look is online and there are a lot of firms available who can do the work for you at a reasonable price.

When you have given your pictures to a company for restoration they will first asses the condition and decide whether they can be repaired. If they can then the company will give you a quotation for the work and wait for the go ahead. Pricing will depend on how much work has to be done and how many pictures you are submitting. Discounts are often available if you are sending a large number of photographs.

The technicians who work for the restoration firms can fix most photographs and bring them back to a good condition. Pictures that have faded due to exposure to bright sunlight can often be restored. Ripped or badly creased photos can also be fixed and the repairs are usually not noticeable when they are returned to you.

Other services offered by the restoration companies are color enhancements where black and white or sepia pictures can be colored. The company will use special computer software to add color to a picture whilst retaining the original detail. Your old pictures will remain as they were and will be sent back to you with the new copies.

When your old pictures have been restored the companies will send proof copies of the final images for you to approve. When you have approved the new copies they will be printed as hard copies or digital images will be transferred to disc or hard drive. It is always a good idea to get the digital copies as these can be used as backup copies. Many companies will keep copies of your pictures on file in case they are needed in the future.

If you are sending your pictures to a firm by courier it is essential to have them insured against loss or damage while they are in transit. Also make sure they are well protected when you package them for mailing. Any special instructions for the technicians should be sent with the pictures or emailed to the company before the work commences.

When you have received your restored prints they should be properly stored in photograph albums or boxes. They should always be kept out of direct sunlight and well away from any areas of moisture. If you only have digital copies then they should be copied onto another device and kept safe in case the original images are lost.
