The term photographer comes from a Greek word. When translated into English, it means drawing with light. By definition, a photographer is an individual who makes photographs. The individual is usually skilled in taking photos of people, landscapes, machines, and plants. The thousands of photographers who are employed in the United states work in different industries. Photographic services, universities, colleges, newspapers, recreation, entertainment, television broadcasting, publishers, professional schools, and arts are some of the common employers of photographers. Several hundreds of photographers also work in the self-employment sector. Over sixty percent of all photographers worked in the private sector in 2012.

The kind of environment one works in is usually dictated by the area of photography they specialize in. For portrait photographers, studios are the main work environment. Typically, aerial photographers work from elevated grounds or above the ground in aircraft.

There is a lot of travelling done by news and commercial photographers. They have to go to local and international destinations to work. For example, photographers have to go to war torn areas to take photos of what is happening. Usually, short notices are issued for one to be available for work.

The job involves travelling for long distances on foot. Most of the work done by photographers is done while standing. There is a lot of heavy equipment that these workers have to bring along when they go on a job. They have to carry the equipment for long hours. As such, one needs to be physically fit to be able to carry such equipment.

According to statistical evidence, for every three photographers, one works on a part-time basis. Work schedules for photographers are very flexible. There are several different specialties in which photographers can specialize. Similarly, each specialty also differs in the season when it has the highest demand. For example, spring and summer months are usually peak seasons for wedding photographers.

There is no formal education needed for one to work as a photographer. However, to attract more employers, these workers usually pursue various education routes. A photographer may have a degree in photography. Such courses improve chances of employment as well as personal skills in the field. There are other related fields that one may pursue to work in this industry.

One can take a course in photography from various educational institutions, including community and junior colleges, universities, private technical schools, vocational-technical institutes, and private trade schools. There are many processes, equipment, and techniques covered in training courses. Some of the additional skills that one needs to be proficient in this field include business, marketing, and accounting.
