Basic Elements Of Digital Photography

By Tony Castle

Cameras are everywhere these days, more than ever. Many people own traditional or digital equipment, and the ubiquity of smart phone embedded cameras makes photography something that everyone does nowadays.

Digital imaging and cheap mobile cameras have revolutionized things for the amateur photographer. There are loads of advantages available to those who opt for the digital route, one of the most important being the ability to scan, evaluate, and select your shots before getting the film developed.

Even the best photographers have a use for an image manipulation or editing suite like Photoshop. While this program is designed to create graphics from the ground up, it also exists to allow people to easily correct things like color, white balance, and contrast in order to achieve certain effects.

For the most part it is the retouching tools which people use the most. Removing glare, demonic eyes, and other problems is usually trivial. An editing suite can't get your thumb off the lens, though.

Getting your pictures from your digital camera to your home computer so that you can fiddle with them in an editing suite is a very easy thing. Nearly all cameras come with a USB connection which allows you to simply plug the device into your tower. Once your operating system locates the new hardware, it should prompt you with several retrieval options.

Digital media is unique in that it does not degrade over time nor are copies of an original in any way less perfect than their progenitor. You can get multiple copies of a traditional film image, but each copy costs more money and there is always a chance of degradation or loss of quality in the transfer process.

It doesn't matter if you have just picked up a camera for the very first time or if you have been comfortable with them since a young age. Both the experienced and the novice will spend a lot of time learning and refining their technique. Learning to see the world as a collection of great photos is a skill.

The aim of photography is to get an image of the real world into an artistic or creative place. With the advent of digital cameras nearly anyone at all is perfectly able to achieve good results quite easily. The devices are incredibly convenient and portable, perform very well, and the resulting pictures are very easy to retrieve quickly.
