Getting the Perfect Camera Accessories

By Martina Nabruscha

If you are treating yourself to a new camera or purchasing one for the first time chances are your interest in the hobby or in taking pictures will be uplifted by your shopping. Getting a new camera is thrilling and whilst you are buying the camera it is worth looking at the accessories which are available too. Many such as batteries and memory cards are supplied with the camera and are necessary right from the start, others are optional extras which have uses at different times and some like a tripod are useful to everyone. Which ones you choose depend on what kind of level you photograph at.

For most photographers one memory card is not enough, buying additional memory cards is a way of ensuring that even if you have not yet downloaded your pictures you have ample space to take photos. Holidays, weddings and other occasions are typical times when extra memory cards may prove invaluable.

In the same respect ensuring that your camera battery is fully charged is vital if you are going to be ready to take a picture at any moment. Having an extra battery which you keep charged at all times eliminates the chances of finding yourself caught out.

Buying a camera bag is about personal preference. Using a case or bag to carry your camera helps to protect it and if you have additional equipment like extra lenses, lens filters or a tripod it is great to know all your equipment can be stored and carried in one place.

Camera cleaning equipment is also a must, whether you elect to buy a battery operated air duster or just a soft cleaning cloth. By using the right equipment you will prolong the life of the camera and lens and get better results. Never be tempted to use the wrong kind of cloth on a lens, it could scratch and spoil your photographs. Keeping your tripod clean matters too.

If you are purchasing a digital SLR camera you will have the option of buying extra lenses for the camera at the time of purchase or at a later date. Compact digital cameras come with built in variations of the lens and do not have the option of extra lenses.

Lens filters for digital SLR cameras work in two ways. They influence the light entering through the lens in one way or another which can be used both creatively and to maximise results when taking pictures. Lens filters also protect the lens when kept on preventing scratching and dirt. All photographers should ideally choose at least UV lens filters for their lenses even if they do not intend to use them for anything other than protection.

Finally a tripod offers stability and can be used on any kind of camera. It is possible to buy a large or small tripod, depending on preference. A small and extremely flexible tripod can be used on any surface to level the camera and hold it securely for a tricky photo. They are also useful for shots taken on self-timer when the photographer needs to know they can set the shot up and race back to be included in the picture knowing the camera is secure on a tripod and will stay in position. Such a small tripod can be used on either SLR or compact cameras.
