How Green Screen Studio Is Used In Filming & Photography

By Trevor Weir

Green screen studio technology is something that started from the film industry. It is used to create special visual effects in movies and enhance the photography that is used in filming. It is also referred to as chroma key technology.

This use of technology initially started off using a blue screen in the background and now the standard format is to use green. The colours chosen is based how contrasting it is to the tones in the human skin. Over time, green just proved to be the more effective option in creating enhanced visuals especially when the filming is done outdoors.

Originally, green screen studio was used on television for weather reports. The results that it achieved were very impressive so filmmakers and photographers decided to incorporate it into their work.

The post-production work that went into filmmaking is a long a tedious process to create special visual effects. Chroma key technology offered a great way to cut out a lot of the work and create a better result by having a computer do most of the imaging. The method that was in use previous to this is called the 'travelling matte' method. RKO Radio Pictures pioneered both of these methods.

Most of the improvements are based of the advancement of our technology. Professional cameras such as the Canon 5d help in reducing the work that is need normally required in post-production. Some background visuals that are created can now be completely computer generated.

Some films today use CGI ' computer generated imaging and this goes hand in hand with green screen studio. It allows the actors to stay in the studio and be completely transported to a whole new setting. Two actors in one frame do not even need to be in the same take to appear in the same scene.
